Over Qualified
Contributed by Anonymous on Monday, January 18 @ 20:49:10 EST
I was just wondering how many people out there presently working in retail are extraordinarily overqualified. I have a master degree, other sales associates in my store have MBA's, law degrees, etc. I am presently earning less than I paid my maid. I am grateful to be employed and have a paycheck - be it a laughable one, I find it exceedingly depressing, demoralzing and crushing. I was wondering how many others share the same sentiments and experience.

It's old news that a lot of unemployed have taken jobs for which they're overqualified - that's what happens with high unemployment.  Since you're only working retail temporarily, I'm surprised you've found this website.  It took me ~5 yrs of working retail part-time, then full-time, to finally Google "retail sucks."

There is a silver lining though - all those with advanced degrees will probably be better customers now that they've had to work retail.  Plus, the economy has forced people to save more, a reality check for those that were living beyond their means.

The down side for me is that I've always lived within my means, but now I'm competing for the same jobs with only a bachelor's degree.  Luckily, I've been able to survive off unemployment and savings.  By the time we're back to a natural rate of unemployment, we may have seen 2 yrs of double-digit joblessness.

I've been told I'm overqualified for what I do.  In truth, I probably am. I hold two bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and Criminology and I'm essentially a thief-catcher.  While you don't honestly need anything more than a HS diploma and common sense to do what I do, I feel that my degrees give me a competitive edge in this day and age where every employer wants a degree for any damned job, regardless of what the job actually is.  Even in the retail market employers are wanting at least Associate's, if not Bachelor's degrees for a lot of positions (some places like Target require their senior management staff i.e., district, regional, etc. to hold Master's degrees or higher advanced degrees to even be considered for hiring or promotion.  Just a reality these days. And with the US unemployment rate not dropping substantially anytime soon, it's going to be like that for a while.

I'm overqualified for working in retail. I hold a class a CDL, the one that allows you to drive a tractor-trailer.

Sadly, I don't have enough expeience for many trucking companies. Oh well, al least I have a diversified skill set!
