I have been with DG for almost 6 months as a 3rd key. I have come to realize that there are a lot of things that this company does that make zero sense (or possibly it's just my DM or RM...I'd be interested to know what other DG regions do). For instance, we are required to fill out paperwork that shows each cashiers over/short (this is the only one that makes good sense), their total number or transactions on a shift, the average basket of those transactions, the average number of seconds in between items in a transaction and the amount of voids. If a cashier rings up more than 50 customers and their average basket is 50 cents or more lower than the store's average basket they get highlighted and circled. If this happens on 50% or more of their shifts they get written up. We have a lady that works for us that only works once or twice a week. Usually a night shift where the sales are lower, she's gotten written up a bunch of times.
Now typically when you think of a write up you think something along the lines of "3 strikes and you're out", am I correct? My manager asked my DM about it since she keeps getting written up. His response was that they're allowed to get 50 "write ups" before any action is taken. Well then please tell me why we even bother with it then?? It can't be that important! Also, the average seconds between items and the average basket. Apparently if the average seconds are high and the average basket is low then that is an indicator of a cashier stealing. Now, I can somewhat understand the logic...but to have to focus on it like we do is a little silly. I wonder just how many cashiers they have busted by looking at those numbers. You can't force a customer to spend an extra $5.00, you can't count your customers and then turn the rest away before you get to 50, it's impractical to wait for every item to be placed on your counter while you're ringing in order to get the fastest scan time. Things don't always work out that way. My boss, who is a devot Christian, great guy, his scan rate the other day was 12.3 seconds (very high) and his average basket was $4.23 (very low)...so I should automatically assume that he was stealing??? I think not. My boss also got into trouble by the DM because he spends too much time watching the cashiers at the front. And that we should rely more on the chart. Tell me how much sense that makes. Isn't it a better practice for a manager to be involved with his staff and watching them, and them knowing that he's watching them then for them to have free roam and hope that the numbers pick something up????
